Lights Out

Logic·Medium·3–10 min

Switch off every light on a five-by-five board. Each tap changes a light and its neighbors, creating a compact logic challenge with surprisingly deep patterns.

How to play Lights Out

  1. Tap any square to toggle its light and its edge-sharing neighbors.
  2. Notice that diagonal lights are unaffected.
  3. Plan combinations of taps that cancel unwanted changes.
  4. Turn off all 25 lights to win.
  5. Reset retries your current board; New puzzle creates another solvable pattern.

Controls: Click or tap any square. Use Tab and Enter to toggle lights with a keyboard.

One tap can change five things at once in Lights Out. Select any square to toggle its light along with the lights directly above, below, left, and right. Diagonal neighbors stay unchanged. Your task is to turn the entire five-by-five board dark, even when switching off one light turns another back on. Each starting pattern is produced by making valid moves from an empty board, so it always has a solution. Reset restores the current pattern for another approach, and New puzzle gives you a fresh one. There is no move limit, leaving room to explore how neighboring switches interact.

A few useful tips

  • Tapping the same square twice cancels its effect.
  • The order of a chosen set of taps does not change the final result.
  • Work downward: tap beneath a lit cell in the previous row to switch it off.

Frequently asked questions

Can every starting pattern be solved?

Every pattern generated here is solvable because it is made by applying valid toggles to an all-off board.

Do corner switches work differently?

They follow the same rule, but have fewer neighbors. A corner toggles itself and its two edge-sharing neighbors.

Does the game limit my moves?

No. The counter tracks your taps, but you can keep experimenting until every light is off.
