How to play Word Ladder
- Read the starting word and the goal above your word path.
- Enter a four-letter word that changes exactly one letter of your current word.
- Use words from the game’s curated English word list; repeated words are not allowed.
- Choose Undo to step back, or Hint for a possible next word toward the goal.
- Reach the goal, then open Today’s Puzzle Break to copy an answer-free result.
Controls: Type a four-letter word and press Enter or Add word. Use Undo, Hint, and the two-step Reset control.
Turn one familiar four-letter word into another through a chain of small changes. Each step in Word Ladder must change exactly one letter while keeping the other three in place. Every entry must also belong to our curated common-word list. The daily puzzle gives everyone the same starting word and goal for a UTC date, with a known route between them. Your route does not have to match that shortest solution. Use Undo to explore a different branch, or ask for a hint from your current position. Browser storage keeps your path between visits, and completed results can be shared without revealing the route.
A few useful tips
- Try changing vowels as well as consonants when you feel stuck.
- A useful step may temporarily look less like the goal word.
- Compare your route with the displayed shortest move count, but finish at your own pace.

Why was an English word rejected?
This game uses a curated list of common four-letter words, not a complete dictionary. A valid step must be in that list and change exactly one letter.
Must I find the shortest solution?
No. Any valid chain reaching the goal completes the puzzle. The shortest move count is a challenge to aim for, not a requirement.
How do hints work?
A hint searches from your current word toward the goal. It suggests a next word or asks you to undo to an earlier step. Suggested-word hints are counted in your result.
Is the puzzle different every day?
The daily ladder changes at midnight UTC using a rotating bank of checked word pairs. Pairs eventually repeat. Progress is saved only on this browser when storage is available.
